WAND

Original work, lent by the square metre of wall. Two square metres is €24 a month; eighteen is €185. We deliver it, hang it, insure it and take it away again twelve weeks later.

The unit

A wall is a measurement before it is a wall.

We do not sell pictures and we do not rent them one at a time. You tell us how much wall you have, we tell you what it costs a month, and the works that fill it change four times a year. The smallest membership is two square metres — about three works at the sizes most people own. The largest we hang in one visit is forty.

Every page on this site is this wall, spent differently.

Nineteen works, 11.42 m² of the 19.84 m² available, rail at 2.85 m, centres held on the 1.45 m line. The plan goes out with the van, comes back marked up, and is filed with the condition sheets. You get a copy on the day, drawn at 1:20.

How a hang is planned
One wall, one year

Four rotations of the same 19.84 m²

The wall does not change. What hangs on it changes every twelve weeks, and the square metres have to add up each time. These are the four hangs the depot wall carried in 2026.

Week 0422 January

Winter hang — heavy, low, close together

Twenty-three works, nothing above 1.0 m², the whole hang dropped 90 mm so it reads from a chair. Two of Marthe Okkerse's graphite boards went out of this hang to a dentist on Brusselseweg and never came back — renewed twice.

  • 23 works
  • 12.8 m² hung
  • 7.0 m² left bare
Week 1616 April

Spring hang — one large work, the rest cleared

Nkechi Baptiste's 1500 × 1500 cotton relief took 2.25 m² on its own and we hung nine small works around it rather than the usual twenty. Members hated it for three weeks and then four of them asked for the same thing at home.

  • 10 works
  • 6.4 m² hung
  • 13.4 m² left bare
Week 289 July

Summer hang — paper only, rail at 2.85 m

Thirty-one works on paper, all glazed, all from editions, nothing worth more than €1 400. This is the hang we lend to film productions: cheap to replace, and the whole wall comes down in forty minutes.

  • 31 works
  • 9.1 m² hung
  • 10.7 m² left bare
Week 401 October

Autumn hang — the one in the photographs above

Nineteen works, 11.42 m², the plan drawn on Plate 1. It came down on 14 October after one knock to a frame corner, repaired at the depot for nothing, and the wall was bare for five hours before the next hang went up.

  • 19 works
  • 11.4 m² hung
  • 8.4 m² left bare

Joost Rademaker, who runs a nine-person practice, photographed against a pale wall
The first hang was wrong for us and I said so. They came back on the Thursday, took eleven of the nineteen down, and left the wall half empty on purpose. It has been right ever since.

how much wall have you got?

Send the measurement — width and height, or a photograph with a door in it — and we will come back within two working days with what fits, what it costs a month and the first hang date we can offer.

No newsletter. One reply from a person at the depot, and nothing after that unless you ask.
